Wesley's Covenant Service

This past Sunday we used John Wesley's Covenant Service for our morning worship. The service is in the back of our hymnal. Updated language editions are available on-line. We used one of the editions from http://wesley.nnu.edu/john_wesley/covenant/index.htm.

This was the first time I've used this or been in a service that used it. It is wonderfully rich in scripture, radical in confession, rabid in imagery. In the final prayer of covenant Wesley brings forth the imagery of marriage and when your reading/praying you speak of Christ as your husband. It's not an easy prayer to pray, no matter how correct it is biblically or theologically. The entire service challenges our notions of timid assent of God or Jesus his Son, it calls for a trinitarian repsonse (body, heart and mind) to the Trinity who is God.

Check it out. It's a great way to start a new year - challenged to walk faithfully with Jesus in full throttle devotion.
