In a letter to Januarius, a friend in ministry, Augustine gave advice about differences in
liturgical practices among the churches. Augustine advised:
Follow the custom of the local church. If a
particular variance in custom or observation addressed a real spiritual need in
the church, induced holiness and true devotion, and was not contrary to faith
or Christian morality, it should be accepted, supported and celebrated. (Brian Williams, The Potters Rib, 201)
